128-ounce canwhole tomatoes (such as San Marzano), undrained and chopped
1mediummedium yellow onionpeeled and cut in half lengthwise
4garlic gloves
5tablespoonsunsalted butter
1teaspoonkosher salt
Instructions
Place tomatoes, onion, garlic, butter, and salt in a large saucepan.
Cook over medium-low, uncovered, stirring occasionally and mashing any large pieces of tomato using the back of a wooden spoon, until the sauce is slightly thickened, about 1 hour.
Remove the onion and garlic.
Season with additional salt to taste. Remove from heat.
